Welcome to Medical Terminology ONLINE. This class is designed to help you learn the language of medicine. It is almost like learning a whole new language. With knowledge of this "language" you will be able to understand communication among health care professionals. Students who have taken this class have said," Now I know what the doctor was saying when my mother was sick and in the hospital". Your medical terminology skills are useful in any field of medicine that you choose to go into.
This class is intended to be at a basic level - starting with the assumption that you have had no experience with the medical field. The course is organized into body systems, covering (1) simple physiology, (2) common disease conditions that affect each body system, (3) commonly used diagnostic tests, and (4) medical/surgical interventions. You will learn how medical words are constructed from "word roots" plus prefixes and suffixes. To get an idea of course content, visit the bookstore and take a look at the course text.
